Happy St George?s Day! Let?s celebrate!

voltar Happy St George?s Day! Let?s celebrate!

According to legend, St George was a soldier in the Roman army who killed a dragon and saved a princess. He is recognised as the patron saint of England for his bravery and for refusing to stop being a Christian during a campaign against those who believed in Christianity.

The celebration of England’s patron saint – St George - takes place every year on April 23rd. It is England’s national day but not a public holiday. Schools, shops, post offices, … are open as usual.

In England there are parades, dancing and other activities. Flags with the image of St George’s cross (a red cross on a white background which has been the official flag of England for centuries) are flown on some buildings, especially pubs, but they are waved proudly across the country, as well. Also, some people wear a rose, England’s national flower, on their lapel.

As part of CNSB school activities, this particular day was remembered and celebrated, too.

Being decorated with the symbols of St George’s Day, our cafeteria was place for something special: all students and teachers could indulge themselves with delicious scones served with a combination of homemade jams and experience the best of the afternoon tea tradition, tasting different tea flavours.

Being taught in our school, English language and English culture have great reach and influence and this day turned out to be a different lesson!

A special thanks to all the students that have contributed to this English Day!
